Join us for a leisurely family paddle in our fleet of canoes guided by our expert naturalist instructors. No experience necessary, and we provide all of the necessary equipment. We will explore the local flora and fauna of Bair Island, a rare example of an undevelopped wetland ecosystem. 5 yrs or older.

Every year, on the third Saturday in September, people join together at sites all over California to take part in the State's largest volunteer event, California Coastal Cleanup Day. This year MSI will be cleaning up a brand new site in Montara, Grey Whale Cove! Join us and thousands of volunteers as we participate in removing trash from our beautiful coast.


MSI will provide gloves and bags for collecting waste and recycling. HOWEVER, a theme the state encourages, in an effort to lessen the environmental footprint of the day, is to bring your own clean-up supplies (pails, light garden gloves, etc.) if you have them
































Nurdle Patrol @ Crissy Field FREE EVENT


Saturday, October 4       10 am ~ 12:00 pm PART 3 OF COAST WEEK SERIES!


The Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary and MSI invite you to take a look at the many strange and surprising things that travel the oceans and drift along the shore by Crissy Field. Use microscopes to discover a whole world of bizarre plants and animals living in a few drops of water. What else is drifting out there? Join the “Nurdle Patrol” and become a debris detective with a beach clean up at Crissy Field. Find out the links between plastic debris and creatures such as the mighty albatross.

Explore Elkhorn Slough by Pontoon Boat

Join MSI and our friends at Elkhorn Slough Safari to learn first-hand about one of California’s most spectacular estuaries. Nationally recognized and protected as an Estuarine Research Reserve, Elkhorn Slough located in Moss Landing between Santa Cruz and Monterey, is naturally bountiful as a migratory bird flyway, otter and seal habitat and home to thousands of other plant and animals.

Low Tide Walk


Saturday, October 25     Time: 4:30pm~6:30pm


MSI takes to the tidepools for a treasure hunt of nature's beautiful intertidal secrets. We'll spend our time taking advantage of the low tide to reach the outer edges of Pillar Point, while taking in spectacular vantages as we slowly retreat to shore. Will we find crabs, sea stars, eels an octopus!? This is a great all-ages, family event. Space tends to fill up for these events quickly, so please RSVP soon.

Marsh & Beach Exploration


Saturday, November 1 Time: 10am~12:30pm



Come jois us as we explore the secrets of the sandy beach habitat, then move inland through the marshland and learn about birds and plant life specially adapted to this environment. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in our favorite climbing tree!

San Francisco SPECIAL Discovery Ecovoyage


Saturday, November 22     Time: 1:00pm~3:00pm and 3:00pm~5:00pm          


Climb aboard our floating classroom, the 90' Research Vessel the Robert G. Brownlee, for an exploration of the San Francisco Bay like no other! Eco-Voyages in San Francisco only happen once a year! Departing from pier 40 in San Francisco offers a great opportunity to see inhabitants of both the great Pacific Ocean and the quieter estuary of San Francisco Bay.

Must be at least 5 years old to board; all children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult; close-toed shoes required.

$40 for adults, $30 for children (5-12)

Shark Day


Check Back For Dates


MSI loves sharks! Our special Shark Day invites one and all to learn about these amazing creatures, from the Great Whites that swim just off our ocean shores, to the gentle Leopard Sharks that are common in our Bay.We will be feeding and touching our local Leopard Sharks in our teaching aquarium, and viewing information about the vital role of these top predators around our world's oceans.

MSI Event Cancellation and refund policy: For a full refund, we ask our guests to cancel their registrations with a minimum of one weeks notice. This allows for families on waiting lists to register and adequately plan their calendars. Please note our events still take place rain or shine including our Discovery Voyages unless deemed a safety issue by the ship's Captain. Should MSI cancel an event for any reason you will be notified via the contact information provided through registration and be issued a full refund.
