Over 40,000 students each year join the Marine Science Institute (MSI) on adventures in learning about marine life in the San Francisco Bay, most notably aboard our 90-foot marine research vessel the Robert G. Brownlee. Many come away with a new sense of awe & respect for what they experience. Turning those impressions into creative expressions is what MSI’s Translating the Tides contest is all about.

For the 2006-2007 school year, over one thousand students sent in their work. We considered each entree, and are proud to present the top tier to you. Please download this free publication and share with these exceptionally talented students their excitement, irony, concern, wit and wonder of San Francisco Bay.

About This Book

Translating the Tides is a creative contest run by the Marine Science
Institute (MSI) for students in grades Kindergarten through college who
participate in MSI’s hands-on marine science education programs. This
book is the publication of the eighth collection of prize-winning work.
As you will see in the following pages, Translating the Tides contest is a
wonderful opportunity for students to express in their own voices what
they have learned and what they want others to know about our marine
environments. We are very proud of the students whose work is featured
in this book, as well as all of the students who participated in the contest.
Each year, the decision of which entries to put into the book is very
difficult. We are inspired by the students’ creativity, respect for the
environment, and quest for knowledge.

Our deepest thanks and gratitude goes out to those who helped create
this book:

For the time, talent, and care they devoted to reviewing each of more
than a thousand poems, our Contest Judge volunteers from these
generous organizations -
