Eric Anderson, Chair: Manager,
BainCRG, San Francisco
Eric Anderson has been a member of MSI's Board since 2008. He co-chairs MSI's Development Committee and is focused on building the resources MSI can dedicate to reaching more of the Bay Area's children. Growing up in a small coastal town, Eric developed a healthy respect for our marine ecosystem and in his free time continues to enjoy many on-water activities. Professionally, Eric specializes in corporate turnarounds and restructurings with Bain Corporate Renewal Group.
Arthur Burton: Retired CEO, Sequoia Analytical, Atherton
Art Burton has been on MSI's Board of Trustees since 5 years, serving as the Chair since 2007. Art graduated from Stanford University in 1970 with a BA in Biological Science and received a MA in Environmental Engineering from Stanford in 1986. He founded Sequoia Analytical, an environmental testing organization which grew to 20 laboratories throughout the country with a total scientific staff of 600. Art has been married for 40 years, has three daughters and five grandchildren. He is proud to say that all three daughters have been on a Discovery Voyage program with MSI.
Denise Malmquist-Little, Secretary: Teacher, San Francisco
Denise D Malmquist-Little has been on MSIs Board of Trustees since 2004 and serves as the Board Secretary. D is a teacher with over 40 years of experience. She holds three California teaching credentials, and has an MA in School Administration emphasizing Curriculum Development and Test/Measurement. D is very active in her church community and in serving her school and parish, as well as the Girls Scouts of America. D is married, has one granddaughter, and one cat named Flip; her family is very close and spend a lot of time together. D has been bringing her classes to MSI for over 15 years, providing hands-on science education to countless students.
Francis 'Pancho' Chang: Executive Director, Walter S. Johnson Foundation, Menlo Park
Pancho Chang has been on MSI's Board of Trustees since 2007. After working for two Bay area foundations, he is now the Executive Director of the Walter S. Johnson Foundation in Menlo Park, CA, where he worked since 2001. Pancho graduated from Brandeis and Boston Universities and is a member of the Massachusetts and California bars. While he has been a Kellogg National fellow at Boston City Hospital, a Pew Health Policy fellow at Rand and an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality award, he admits that he has never caught a sturgeon.
Jim Crawford, Treasurer: President, Turner Designs, Sunnyvale
Jim Crawford has been on MSI's Board of Trustees since 2008. He is the Owner and President of Turner Designs, which develops and manufactures instruments used by oceanographers and marine biologists to measure the health of natural waters throughout the world. In addition to his personal support of MSI, Turner Designs has been a supporter of MSI since 2002. Jim has a B.S. from Princeton University and an M.S. from Stanford University.
Andrea Swensrud, Board Development: Project Supervisor, KQED, San Francisco
Andrea Swensrud has been on MSIs Board of Trustees since 2007. She has a passion for teaching students of all ages about the marine environment. From 1999-2007, she worked at the Marine Science Institute and held a variety of positions, including Ship Program Coordinator, Marine Camp Director and Program Manager. Andrea has a B.A. in Environmental Sciences from UC Berkeley, and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and M.A. in Teaching from USF. Currently, she develops curriculum and coordinates outreach for science projects at KQED Public Broadcasting.
Ron Piovesan: Manager, Global Corporate Development, Cisco
Ron is the newest addition to MSI’s Board of Trustees. Prior to working with Cisco, he worked for over 10 years in various business development and corporate communications roles. Globally educated, he has a Bachelors degree from Carleton University in Canada, a Masters from Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK, and an MBA from the joint program at Columbia GSB and UC Berkeley Haas School of Business.
