Afternoon Ecology

Afternoon Ecology is a program designed for learners who are curious about habitats in the San Francisco Bay. We offer three different sessions; one in fall, winter and spring, each with a unique curriculum that brings out the natural curiosity of young minds. These sessions can be taken independently or as a series. This is an excellent opportunity for students from surrounding communities to make friends while expanding their scientific knowledge in a fun and exciting way!

Mondays, 3:15 - 4:45pm, Ages 6-11
Six 1.5 hour classes - cost is only $100 per student

Grouping will be based on student ages and number of participants. A minimum of 8/group to a maximum of 15/group.

Fall 2010 Session

Animals : Bay vs. Ocean

Marine Biology studies the life in salt water! This session, students will explore the many species of animals that rely on salt water environments, both from the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Comparisons will be made between estuarine and oceanic animals' adaptations, habitats, and feeding strategies. Students will get the opportunity to handle live animals, including fish, invertebrates, and even a shark! They will also get a chance to use real scientific equipment to catch these animals and study the water in which these animals live. All these activities will have the students working in small groups using teamwork and draw pictures of their favorite animals in their log books each day.

Winter 2011 Session

Bay Area Ecosystems

What are the different ecosystems that animals live in, around the San Francisco Bay Area? Students will explore the many salt water ecosystems that are found in their neighborhood. Each day, students will get hands-on in the field of Marine Biology. Students will use real scientific equipment, write in a small journal, touch animals found in the respective ecosystems, and work as part of a team. The course will uncover different ecosystems each day, starting out in the open Pacific Ocean and will move further toward and into the San Francisco Bay. Students will gain confidence in using scientific equipment, working within a group, and learn information on each ecosystem and the animals that live there.

* no class held on February 21st

Spring 2011 Session

Marine Science Exploration

How do Marine Biologists study the marine ecosystems of the San Francisco Bay Area? Students will explore the many ecosystems that are found in their neighborhood. Each day, students will get hands-on in the field of Marine Biology. Students will use real scientific equipment, write in a small journal, touch animals found in the respective ecosystems, and work as part of a team. The course will explore the tools and methods that marine scientist use in the field to gather information and conduct surveys. Each day, students will be a scientist learning how to catch animals, take data on these animals, take care of the animals in our aquarium, and dissect a squid! Students will gain confidence in using scientific equipment, working within a group, and learn information about the animals that they catch.
