The Marine Science Institute (MSI) connects students with their local marine ecosystems through hands-on educational activities that encourage students to observe, inquire, and innovate.
     MSI offers a variety of content-standards based programs for grades Pre-K through college. Click on the links below to explore our opportunities for hands-on learning.

Inland Voyages

 (Grades preK to adult)

MSI will bring the marine environment into your classroom during fun, hands-on sessions featuring live animals.

 

Shoreside Programs

(Grades pre K and up)
Bring your class to MSI’s Redwood City facility for a 2 – 3 hour field trip
featuring live animals and real scientific equipment.

Ocean Lab

(Grades 4 and up)
Students will visit MSI’s aquarium, or we will come to your classroom, for a hands-on, taxonomy-based exploration of five different phyla found in our local marine ecosystems.

Canoes in Sloughs

(Grades 6 and up)
Grades 6 and up will love the chance to explore the sloughs of San Francisco Bay by canoe!

Discovery Voyage

(Grades 4 and up)
Voyages aboard our 90-foot research vessel, the R/V Robert G. Brownleer. These voyages are an exciting opportunity to explore the bay or delta ecosystem firsthand!

Biomimicry

(Grades 5 and up)
One of our newest programs asks your students to answer the question “How would nature solve this problem?” as they design floating marine laboratories aboard the R/V Robert G. Brownlee.

Tidepool Expedition

(Grades 3 and up)
Meet MSI instructors at Half Moon Bay’s Pillar Point for a low-tide adventure at the rocky seashore.

 

Marsh and Beach Exploration

(Grades 3 and up)
What is a marsh? How are the marsh and beach connected? Explore these habitats with MSI instructors at Pescadero State Beach.

Scientific Method Combo

(Grades 4 and up)

Join MSI in taking the most in-depth exploration into our unique Bay area habitats. A field trip is combined with pre and post visits to your classroom.
