Marsh & Beach Exploration- Grades 3 and up

Pescadero Marsh & Beach Exploration is a wonderful opportunity to get students to experience nature through hands-on learning. Our instructors will guide your students through activities based on sandy beach and marsh & mudflat ecology. Students will gain an understanding of how beaches, marshes, and mudflats are formed and how humans impact these delicate ecosystems. The program is divided in two stations, Marsh Walk and Beach Exploration. We love this program because the marsh and beach provide so much contrast in organisms and environment.

Beach Exploration
At the beach, there are many activities that we can do with your group. Students can compare sand found locally with sand from beaches around the world, explore the beach wrack-line, use magnets to extract iron ore from beach sand or also do a beach pollution survey where they collect trash that has come ashore or filtered down the creek.

Marsh Walk
This is our opportunity to teach the value of the marsh ecosystem. With the aid of binoculars, students will have the opportunity to identify several types of shore and wading birds, learn about the indigenous & invasive flora, and have discussions about habitat, function and interdependence while traversing the marsh and mudflat in the wetlands of Pescadero Creek, a gem of California's coastline.
